The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were unanimously adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit held at UN Headquarters in September 2015. The SDGs set 17 goals and 169 targets to realize a sustainable, diverse, and inclusive society where no one is left behind.
At MOYU, we are actively pursuing initiatives that contribute to achieving the SDGs.
Target
12.4By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment.
Target
13.3Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
Target
14.1By 2025, prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.
Today, we are surrounded by many plastic products. While plastic is convenient and indispensable to our lives, it also has a serious impact on the environment. It is estimated that about 70% of marine debris is microplastic waste, tiny particles that come from items like plastic bottles and packaging, and there is concern it could enter our bodies through the food chain. It has been reported that an average of 3 pieces of microplastics were detected in the bellies of 49 out of 64 sardines in the seas around Japan (According to a survey by Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology).
Many countries have already begun tightening regulations on plastic use, such as a ban on single-use plastic shopping bags in France. As part of our goal to be an environmentally friendly company, we’ve begun efforts to eliminate plastic containers used for shampoo and other products. In Japan, containers made of 100% plant-derived biodegradable plastic are still under development and are not yet viable for widespread use. Japan’s advanced incineration systems have delayed the push for alternative materials, compared to other countries.. As a step toward reducing plastic use, we have decided to adopt biomass plastic with 30% plant content, which is already commercialized.
While conventional plastics are made from petroleum, biomass-based plastics are made from at least 25% plant-derived components. It reduces carbon dioxide emissions when incinerated, reduces waste by recycling, and saves fossil resources (petroleum).
Target
